Poultrygeist
The Movie’s Poster/Cover
2006 really was a year huh? What much else is there to say about Poultrygeist really? It’s a black comedy/musical/exploit flick which is not exactly what I expected from it, then again I found this movie complete in it’s 3 disc Egg-clusive Collector’s Edition seemingly well worn but unplayed at a music store in Portland and I am cursed by this movie. It’s terrible but in a way I can't help but love every second of the way. From the naming convention of each character’s name being a riff on a food chain, to how it manages to epitomize the stereotypes of the time while also satirically playing off of them, in all honesty it feels like a Postal movie in how it handles its “messages.” Truth be told I don’t think this movie was made with a “purpose” any and all messages and commentary are in my opinion there for comedic flavor more than it is an actual intent of saying something via the director. That all being said it doesn’t stop the movie from exuding this aura of quality. The set design and costuming, the casting and even the singing, is all above and beyond what I was expecting from something like this. With a budget even smaller than that of the original Evil Dead (after accounting for inflation) or just slightly bigger than 1980’s Cannibal Holocaust (again adjusted for inflation) Poultrygeist manages to make a movie so laser point focused on a bit and somehow all the pieces come together to create something unique, interesting, and in the end an actual damn fun time. Sure it’s crass, at times awfully offensive, but honestly it’s got enough satire soaking it’s blade that it doesn’t come across as overtly hateful like some films might, Poultrygeist is definitely a zeitgeist to a degree and is just a treat. My partner even said it was “better than Evil Dead 2”. But enough waffling about the vibes of the movie, what is it actually about?
From left to right
Humus, Mickie, Wendy, Arbie, Denny.
Ok but what is it actually about?
Poultrygeist follows the story of Arbie who’s ex-girlfriend Wendy comes back from college with her new girlfriend Mickie, the both of whom protesting the opening of a new American Chicken Bunker in “Tromaville” (while watching we realized that there is a widespread “Tromaverse” of interconnected movies from these guys so I can’t comment on any of this for now but maybe in the future) and Arbie being mad at his ex for being roped in with a “Femi-Nazi with no bra” as said in the movie’s first musical number (there are many and idk why but I live for it) he figures he’d get a job and “show them the beef.” As established in the opening “dry hump” sex scene, the restaurant was built on an “Indian Burial Ground” and so the spirits of the dead chickens and the Native Americans create for a sort of chicken zombie virus which gets spread on this opening ceremony. It’s really hard to say much else as much of the movie’s plot defies explanation or at least should be seen for oneself. It’s a wild and unhinged tits out, gore filled, musically excellent, romp through what I expect only the first of these “Troma” flicks I’m sure I will end up reviewing later. If you can take the movie as “seriously” as it takes itself then you’re in for a real treat.
That’s right it’s got wet puppets too! Love me some wet puppet.
One last thing.
I was not expecting this to be my next review, this was a random find I found looking for records and watched it with my partner which we both got a blast out of it, but with it gave me an out. I had a different movie planned next and it’s still coming but I think there’ll be a lot more for me to say and will need to take some extra time, but until then I will leave you all with this while we wait for the next one.
Next time (hopefully) we can talk about our dear Professor.
